Japan: Chocolate, Customs, and a Second Valentine’s Day

When it comes to Valentine’s Day in Japan, you’ll quickly notice it’s not quite like what we see in the U.S.

For starters, February 14th is traditionally a day when women give chocolates to men. But not all chocolates are created equal! There’s giri choco (obligation chocolate, often given to coworkers or classmates) and honmei choco (true feelings chocolate, given to a crush, boyfriend, or husband). Talk about cultural layers!

Then, a month later on March 14th, Japan celebrates White Day — when the men return the favor with gifts for the women. These gifts are often white (hence the name): marshmallows, white chocolate, or even jewelry.

Fun Fact:

Italy: Locks of Love, Poetry, and a Feast of the Heart

Italy is known around the world as a country full of romance — and it’s not just because of the food or scenery. Valentine’s Day in Italy, known as La Festa degli Innamorati, has deep roots in poetry, symbolism, and public displays of love.

While many modern Italian Valentine’s celebrations now look a lot like those in the U.S. — with chocolates, flowers, and romantic dinners — older traditions still shape how Italians express affection. Mexico: A Day for Love and Friendship

In Mexico, February 14th is called Día del Amor y la Amistad — the Day of Love and Friendship. France: The “Home of Love Letters”

France is often called the most romantic country in the world, and Valentine’s Day there certainly has a poetic flair. In fact, France may have been the first country to celebrate Valentine’s Day with written love notes — way back in the 1400s!

South Africa: Flowers, Festivals, and Wearing Your Heart

In South Africa, Valentine’s Day is a beautiful mix of Western customs and local traditions — a holiday where people express love boldly and publicly, and often with great joy and color.
